Kata gothic sebenarnya diambil dari sebuah suku di jerman  bernama visigoth, suku ini terkenal dengan kesetiaannya dan suku ini pula adalah suku yang paling di takuti karena telah memukul mundur kerajaan romawi dan konon suku ini pernah di kalahkan oleh kaum muslim. gaya arsitektur gaya gothic itu sangat kental dengan nuansa seram dan gloomy, kalo lihat gereja-gereja abad pertengahan di eropa memang bernuansa seram dan gloomy banyak yang memakai arsitektur ala gothic, bahkan menurut sejarah mesjid nabawi juga sedikit memakai arsitektur ala gothic itu mungkin agar orang yang sholat disana ingat akan dosa-dosa, makannya kata orang disana kalo sembahyang disana suasananya rada-rada seram.

        

Banyak yang mengira bahwa gothic itu aliran satanic, karena seorang penyanyi yang selalu berpenampilan gothic yaitu Marilyn Manson yang diangkat oleh Anton lavey sebagai pendeta di gereja satan, tapi sebenarnya tidak demikian, banyak para gothess (pecinta gothic) yang masih memegang erat kepercayaannya, memang mereka selalu berpenampilan tidak wajar dan menyeramkan tapi itu tidak membuktikan bahwa mereka beraliran satanic.

1. selalu berpakaian serba hitam dan dipadu dengan warna-warna pucat

2. model rambut yang berbeda dengan orang lain 

3. muka pucat

4. pendiam, setia dan berani 

5. dll   

Para gothess biasanya cenderung melukai dirinya sendiri karena mereka sering kali menglami depresi, desperate, keluarga yang disfungsional, masa kecil yang kelam, marah, kecewa, sedih dan benci, selain itu mereka juga  berangapan bahwa setelah  mati akan ada kehidupan yang abadi.

Sekarang mengenai musiknya, mungkin kalian udah pada tau musik  yang beraliran gothic sangat erat dengan suara yang sangat mendayu, biasanya musik gothic selalu memiliki dua orang vokalis, satu vokalis wanita dengan suara sumprano dan satu vokalis pria dengan suara keras(scream), yang biasa disebut dengan beauty and the beast. dan lirik yang penuh dengan depresi, kekecewaan, kebencian, kesedihan, pemberontakan dan perlawanan yang berhenti ditengah jalan.

Ada beberapa aliran gothic seperti : gothic classic : Epica dan Haggard, Nightwish , gothic black metal : the sins of thy beloved, theatre of Tragedy lalu gothic rock : after forever, within temptation dan masih banyak lagi, ada juga gothic murni, gothic choir, gothic doom metal dll.

Dari sejarahnya gothic berasal dari dataran eropa, dan band-band beraliran gothic pun banyak dan berkembang didataran Eropa, seperti : Within Temptation, Teather of Tragedy, Nightwist, Xandria dan lain sebagainya. Jadi, salah besar bahwa Evanescence adalah pelopor band gothic karena Evanescence bukan berasal dari Eropa dan lagu-lagunya komersil maka dari itu tidak ada kultur yang bersinggungan dengan gothic. 

Musik gothic memang bernuansa gothic tapi tidak hitam seperti band-band beraliran black metal dengan simbol pentagram dan hexagran. Jadi gothic tidak cenderung ke arah satanic, karena yang menganut satanic adalah black metal.
